Daniel Pengelly

Daniel Pengelly was born in 2005, and has been playing the flute since the age of 8. After achieving his Licentiate from Trinity College of Music (LTCL) aged just 14, he now attends Chetham’s School in Manchester - one of only a handful of specialist Music Schools in the UK and is a member of the internationally renowned Hallé Youth Orchestra.

He has enjoyed many successes in local, national and international competitions. Beginning in 2016 with being awarded second place in the Vienna Grand prize virtuoso competition and subsequently performing at the Metallener Saal in the Musikverein, a variety of other awards followed such as the West Sussex Youth Music Award, Maidstone Young Musician of the Year, and was recently awarded the Duke of Devonshire award at the Eastbourne Symphony Orchestra's Young Soloist Competition. A highlight in 2020 - just before the pandemic hit - was when Daniel won the British Flute Society Young Performer Competition in Regent’s Hall, London.

A keen composer, Daniel was shortlisted for the BBC Proms Composition Competition, and as well as his flute-playing prowess, he has achieved Distinction at Grade 8 on both piano and recorder. His first concerto performance was at the age of 14 with the North Downs Sinfonia, and his most recent was a performance of his own flute concerto.

Thanks to his burgeoning and blossoming early promise, he received generous funding from the H R Taylor Charitable Trust in 2017 to enable him to purchase his “fantastic Haynes flute!” and has taken much joy and satisfaction in performing many solos and played in a wide range of orchestras and ensembles with it!

In his spare time, Daniel enjoys going to the gym, and even once competed at regional level in gymnastics. Daniel can do a back-flip.
